Violent crypto attacks head for a record year as French tax data leaks

Chainalysis estimated that criminals stole more than $30 million from cryptocurrency holders through physical violence in the first half of 2026, on pace for a record year. Home invasions were 37% of documented attacks, up from 14% in 2025, and relatives or acquaintances were targeted almost a third of cases. France recorded 30 publicly known incidents. Chainalysis reported on a 2024 case in which a French tax official allegedly stole and sold dossiers on high-net-worth crypto holders as a potential cause of the surge. On August 14 the French Finance Ministry separately confirmed that attackers had extracted data on 678,000 individuals and businesses, including reference tax income and family-quotient information, with property addresses and areas also accessed.
ASSESSMENT
Any institution holding data that links identity, address, and holdings carries a version of this risk. The question for families is whether a coerced person or device could authorize a withdrawal.
TAKEAWAYS
Assume any breach touching the family could be used for physical targeting and fold a physical-security review into breach response
Test how a single coerced person or device could move money unknowingly or by force
Brief family members that they can be targeted as the route to the account holder.
