Ukrainian Startup CheckEye Secures $175,000 Grant for AI Retinal Screening

Ukrainian MedTech startup CheckEye has received a $175,000 grant through the US National Academy of Medicine's Healthy Longevity Global Competition, sharing second place in the AI category. The award was presented on October 20 in Washington, DC, during the NAM Global Innovator Summit. CheckEye's platform uses computer vision to analyze micro-changes in retinal blood vessels and identify biomarkers of chronic diseases before symptoms appear. Founded in 2022 with an initial focus on diabetic retinopathy, the company has raised approximately $700,000 to date and entered the German market in 2024. The grant will support platform scaling, while broader commercialization will require additional investment and clinical validation.

GOVERNMENT AI & DIGITAL INFRASTRUCTURE

Ukraine Plans Major AI Data Center Investment

Ukraine's Ministry of Digital Transformation plans to attract investment companies to build a large-scale AI data center, Minister Oksana Ferchuk announced at the Kyiv International Economic Forum. The facility would expand the AI Factory, a smaller sovereign computing facility launched in late summer 2026, and investors will be selected through a competitive process. Domestic infrastructure would allow Ukraine to deploy and train models in a closed environment without external internet access. The ministry also plans to publicly launch the national language model and its dataset, developed with Kyivstar, in January 2027. The initiatives form part of Ukraine's draft AI Strategy through 2030, which targets training 50,000 AI specialists and quadrupling the number of Ukrainian AI companies.

Ukraine Expands Diia.AI Services and National AI Infrastructure

The Ministry of Digital Transformation has expanded Diia.AI, the government's AI assistant, to retrieve a user's credit history from the Ukrainian Bureau of Credit Histories through a text request. Voice interaction is available on the Diia portal, with mobile app integration planned for the end of 2026, and the AI support consultant now accepts photos and screenshots. The ministry also launched the Ukrainian LLM Leaderboard to compare AI model performance in Ukrainian and continues developing Syaivo, the national language model built with Kyivstar and trained on digitized materials from universities, research institutions, and libraries. More than 13,000 users are testing AI assistants on Diia.Education, and the ministry is migrating its AI services to government-controlled infrastructure to reduce dependence on foreign cloud providers.

Ukrainian Zibra AI Launches 30x Data Compression Technology for Physics AI

Ukrainian deep-tech startup Zibra AI has launched ZibraXYZ, a data layer for large-scale engineering simulations and Physics AI. The platform compresses structured 3D and 4D data by up to 30 times and unstructured data by up to 15 times, with lossless or error-bounded storage, and supports volumetric grids, surface grids, point clouds, and splines. Data is stored in compressed blocks with random access, so applications load only the fields, regions, or timesteps they need. Decompression runs directly in GPU memory at up to 500 GB/s. With integrations for PyTorch and ParaView, plus a C++ and Python SDK, ZibraXYZ lets users work with datasets that exceed workstation or GPU memory.

Ukrainian AI Engineers Develop War Crimes Documentation and Data Privacy Tools

At AI HOUSE Camp 2026, held in the Carpathians from October 6 to 11, 28 Ukrainian machine learning engineers in seven teams developed AI solutions to two challenges over six days. Teams Creators and Starlight built systems for the Archive of War that identify Russian military insignia in images and link them to specific units, using a dataset of more than 15,000 images and a catalog of 462 reference insignia. The Archive of War holds more than 151 million media files documenting Russia's full-scale invasion. Team NoName developed a tool that detects and anonymizes personal data in Ukrainian legal documents, including court rulings, enabling safer processing through external AI models. AI HOUSE plans to connect the winning teams with the Archive of War and Ukraine's Ministry of Digital Transformation to explore integration.
