The new cybercrime playbook is being written in AI: Where deepfakes meet deep pockets, your legacy becomes their leverage.
AI has become the major force multiplier for cybercriminals targeting family offices.
However, here’s the part most people don’t want to acknowledge:
Yes, the attackers are getting better tools to make old cybercrime methods more effective...BUT...the threats are also coming from within...𝗳𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗱𝗼𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗜 𝗳𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘁.
Your FO team and family members are already using AI-powered systems with access to inboxes, calendars, documents, and devices (Has your team logged, assessed, or approved all of those AI tools?).
Forgotten AI trials can still retain permissions. Meeting bots are convenient but where does that data go? Smart cameras and edge-AI home systems can quietly ship data across borders. These aren’t hypotheticals—they’re documented vulnerabilities.
Consider the attack vectors now in play: AI-generated voices that can mimic family members in distress or fake kidnappings. Deepfake videos of principals authorizing transactions. Smart malware that learns your communication patterns and mimics them perfectly. Synthetic identities created from scraped social media data, used to infiltrate trusted networks.
The sophistication is staggering.
Cyber criminals know that family offices operate on relationships, discretion, and often informal communication channels. They're exploiting exactly these strengths, turning them into vulnerabilities.
Unfortunately, most family offices are fighting tomorrow's war with yesterday's weapons. Your cybersecurity measures need to be re-adjusted for AI-powered threats.
