RESEARCH & ANALYSIS

Study Reveals Significant AI Bias Against Ukraine in Global Language Models

Texty.org.ua and San Francisco-based OpenBabylon tested 27 open-source language models with 2,803 questions about Ukraine, revealing widespread pro-Russian bias. Chinese models showed the lowest support for Ukrainian narratives (22.1%) and highest pro-Russian bias (19.7%), while Canadian models demonstrated the strongest pro-Ukrainian stance (30.8%). The research found embedded Russian propaganda narratives about "legitimate Russian interests" and Soviet-era justifications across models, highlighting risks for millions of users accessing information through AI-powered search engines and applications.
